1. Understanding Safeguarding
This module on safeguarding in equestrianism focuses on understanding abuse dynamics and fostering safe environments for all participants.
It explains the barriers a perpetrator has to overcome and will increase your awareness of how to control the external barriers and create an environment and culture where abuse cannot take place. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and we must make sure that we safeguard children and young people and adults at risk.
By the end of this module you will understand and be able to define what safeguarding in equestrianism means, consider abuse in the equestrian sport and have a good understanding of who needs protecting against different types of abuse.
2. Safeguarding for Equestrians
In this module we consider safeguarding in equestrian settings and look at what procedures are currently in place.
Having an understanding of the support structure will help to ensure necessary safeguarding measures are in place. You will go through the roles and responsibilities of a Safeguarding Officer and the standards that you can expect from your centre/venue and what measures need to be in place.
3. How can I prevent abuse?
In order to be able to prevent abuse you need to be able to spot the signs. We will look at the physical signs and behavioural symptoms that someone may display if they are a victim of abuse.
It is important to listen to all participants and then use your own voice to raise concerns. We will signpost you to the correct channels to find out further information about safeguarding in equestrianism.
4. Responding to Concerns
When an individual wants to disclose abuse there may well be barriers in the way, which prevent them from speaking up. We will have a look at the different barriers that an individual might be facing and help you to understand how you can support them.
Once you have had a disclosure, you will need to respond appropriately, so we will guide you through step-by-step instructions on how to respond and report.
Once you report your concerns, your information will be confidentially reported and recorded in the central database within British Equestrian. It is essential to have this centralised information to keep participants safe.
5. Case Studies
This module will bring your learning to life with equestrian safeguarding scenarios. It will ask you to consider your own role and what actions you would do, should you be presented with safeguarding cases.
