In this module we will explore what online safety is. While the digital world offers many advantages, it also involves risks in the world of online gaming and social media. As we know the internet does not provide a ‘child-friendly’ environment and therefore there must be guidance for young users.
By the end of the module, you will understand online safety principles and the importance of safeguarding and governance in this area.
2. What is Online Risk?
This module clarifies important terms and introduces concepts of online dangers. Establishing a shared understanding of these terms and concepts is cruical in guiding and protecting young people.
3. Using Social Media
Social media platforms and YouTube are now integral to the social lives of many children and teenagers. Despite age restrictions, younger children frequently use these platforms to connect with friends and a broader audience. In this module, we will overview the primary social media sites and their typical uses. We will also address pressing concerns like the spread of misinformation.
4. Anti-Radicalisation
Extremist groups often use the internet and social media to disseminate propaganda. Even though platforms try to eliminate accounts promoting terror and extremism, the issue remains. Children and young people are especially at risk, highlighting the necessity for anti-radicalisation measures in safeguarding efforts.
This module offers an overview of anti-radicalisation and the government’s counter-terrorism Prevent duty of care.
5. Gaming
The impact of video games on children’s behavior has been a hot topic for both research and in the media. It’s important to differentiate between claims and reals issues concerning gaming safety.
This module aims to provide a balanced view of the actual risks associated with gaming, focusing on safe communication through the games’ chat features.
6. Cyberbullying
This module introduces potential online hazards such as cyberbullying, pro-anorexia websites and misinformation.
7. Dealing with Online Safety Incidents
Understanding the correct protocol for reporting online safety incidents is essential. This module outlines the dos and don’ts to follow if you encounter an online safety issue, helping you navigate legal boundaries and document evidence appropriately.
By the end of this module, you will know the proper channels for reporting incidents.
8. The Smart Generation
The module helps you to protect tech-savvy children in today’s digital world.

This Online Safety Training course has been tailored for any person who works or comes into contact with children and young people in a school or educational setting. We have a range of separate courses that cover all aspects of child protection and Prevent training for schools, including our online Safeguarding in Education course. We also offer an Online Safety Training for Parents course designed to help parents and caregivers understand online safety risks and support teachers and schools.
Certification
Upon successful completion of this online course, you’ll be sent a personalised digital certificate as a PDF, enabling you to download and print it.
You can access a copy, reprint or download this certificate on our LMS (Learning Management System). This is your proof that you have been trained in safeguarding best practices and achieved compliance. The certificates include a verification number so anybody can authenticate the certificate’s legitimacy.
Our certifications include a renewal date but there is no legal requirement to renew your training and certificate within a specific timeframe. However, we do recommend that you arrange refresher training after 1 year as safeguarding guidance does change. You should update your safeguarding knowledge and skills regularly.
