1. Overview and Tips
Your starting point. Sets out the course learning outcomes, explains how to navigate, pause and return to the course, and covers the accessibility features available to you, including read aloud, browser zoom and translation.
2. Core Principles of Safeguarding
What safeguarding means for children and adults at risk, key terms such as ‘child in need’, ‘adult at risk’ and ‘significant harm’, and who is responsible for safeguarding, including safeguarding boards, partner agencies and the safeguarding lead. Covers the key legislation and guidance for child and adult safeguarding across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
3. Creating a Safe Environment
How abuse happens and the barriers that help prevent it, appropriate and inappropriate behaviour for anyone in a position of trust, and the policies and risk assessments training providers should have in place. Covers maintaining a person-centred approach and practical steps for keeping yourself safe, including safer working practice and staying safe online.
4. Recognising Abuse
How to judge whether something is abusive, who may be an abuser, and where abuse can happen. Covers the categories of abuse for children and for adults at risk, including physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect, financial and organisational abuse, along with the signs and indicators to look out for and the links between abuse and mental health.
5. Responding to Concerns
The different ways a learner may disclose abuse, the barriers that can stop them speaking out, and how to listen and respond appropriately when a disclosure is made, including why you must never promise confidentiality.
6. Reporting and Recording Concerns
Your duty to report and record concerns, who to report to, and how to write an accurate record of a disclosure. Covers what to do if an adult discloses non-recent abuse, and the process to follow if a concern involves a colleague, trainee staff member or the safeguarding lead.
7. Online Safety and Safeguarding
Safeguarding learners online, including grooming, cyberbullying and the sharing of images, and what to do if you become aware of an incident. Also covers cybercrime and emerging risks such as AI-generated content, and how to educate and empower learners to stay safe online.
8. Radicalisation and Extremism
Your duty under the Prevent strategy to protect learners from radicalisation, the key definitions of terrorism, extremism and radicalisation, and the signs and indicators to look out for. Covers how to raise a concern and refer it through the Prevent process.
9. Safeguarding in Practice
Apply what you’ve learned to a series of case study scenarios based on training provider settings, using the recognise, respond, report and record framework to decide on the right course of action.
10. Final Assessment
12 questions drawn at random from the Training Providers question bank. You need 80% to pass and earn your Safeguarding for Training Providers certificate, and you can retake the assessment until you pass.
