1. Introduction
This module provides an overview of child and adult safeguarding, along with the relevant guidance that informs policy and practice. It also outlines the role of the Equestrian Safeguarding Officer within an equestrian setting.
2. Role of the Equestrian Safeguarding Officer (ESO)
In this module, you will explore the skills needed to fulfil the role of an Equestrian Safeguarding Officer (ESO) effectively within the equestrian environment. You will also learn about the proactive and reactive activities involved, including how to help create a strong safeguarding culture in your equestrian setting/venue.
The module will also outline the support available to you as an ESO by signposting relevant key organisations.
3. Creating a Safe Culture
In this module, you will learn how to create a safe culture for safeguarding children and adults at risk and how to take a holistic approach to developing a ‘listening culture’.
You will also explore in greater depth the potential barriers that may prevent someone experiencing abuse from disclosing it, and learn how to respond appropriately to help reduce these barriers.
4. Responding to a Safeguarding Concern
In this module, you will learn how to report disclosures from individuals.
You will then look at the rules in equestrianism that explain what behaviours are not allowed, as well as how to recognise and respond to less serious concerns that might still be important to report.
You will also have an understanding of what to do if the perpetrator is another child.
5. Support for Case Management
In this module, you will learn the step-by-step process to follow if you have concerns about an individual.
You will also gain an understanding of who you can turn to for support, and receive tips on how to take care of yourself.
6. Putting your Knowledge into Practice
In this module, you will be introduced to a number of fictional equestrian case studies that will ask you to reflect on your role as a safeguarding lead in an equestrian setting and consider the actions you would take when presented with safeguarding concerns.

The Equestrian Safeguarding Officers Online Training course is suitable for all individuals who work or volunteer in an equestrian setting who hold a safeguarding position at a local level. You must have attended a British Equestrian face-to-face safeguarding training course within the 3 years prior to taking this course.
Certification
The Equestrian Safeguarding Officers Online Training course is accredited by The CPD Group.
Upon successful completion of this online course, you’ll be sent a personalised digital certificate as a PDF, enabling you to download and print it.
You can access a copy, reprint or download this certificate on our LMS (Learning Management System). This is your proof that you have been trained in safeguarding best practices and achieved compliance. The certificates include a verification number so anybody can authenticate the certificate’s legitimacy.
Our certifications include a renewal date but there is no legal requirement to renew your training and certificate within a specific timeframe. However, we do recommend that you arrange refresher training after 3 years as safeguarding guidance does change. You should update your safeguarding knowledge and skills regularly.

Is this training right for all equestrian workers?
The Equestrian Safeguarding Officers Online Training course is designed for individuals who are a safeguarding lead at a local equestrian club or organisation. You might be called a Safeguarding Officer, Club Welfare Officer or something similar. If you work in the equestrian field and are a coach or instructor and would like to refresh your safeguarding knowledge, we have our online Safeguarding for Equestrians Online Training course which would be better for your needs (you would need to have taken a British Equestrian face-to-face safeguarding course in the last 3 years to take this course).
