2. Understand the Role and Responsibilities of a First Aider

3. Assessing Incidents
In this module, you will understand why it is important to stay calm during medical emergencies and the techniques to use to evaluate emergencies swiftly and accurately. You will learn how to identify potential hazards in the surrounding environment, prioritise treatment when evaluating casualties and understand post-first aid procedures, such as cleanup to prevent infection transmission. You’ll also learn about barrier devices to prevent infection spread and cross-contamination and learn the correct way to provide clear, concise and sufficient information when calling the emergency services.
4. First Aid to Unresponsive Casualties
In this module, you will learn the fundamentals of attending to an unresponsive person. This includes an overview of how the respiratory system works and methods to check for consciousness. You will also learn how to ascertain whether someone is breathing normally and explore possible causes of unconsciousness. The course then covers proper cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, emphasising the use of protective barriers to reduce infection risks and situations where only chest compressions are necessary. Lastly, the module guides you through using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and demonstrates how to position someone in the recovery position.
5. Identifying Choking and Administering First Aid
This module teaches you how to recognise a person who is choking and how to administer first aid for both mild and severe choking episodes. The module also includes instructions on identifying signs of hypoxia and responding appropriately with the required first aid measures.
6. The Circulatory System, Blood Loss, Heart Function and Medical Heart Emergencies

How many appointed first aid staff or first aiders do I need?
The exact number of first aiders required isn’t rigidly specified; it depends on the nature of your workplace and your employees’ roles.
