In this introductory module, you will learn why Emergency First Aid at Work Refresher Training plays a pivotal role in confidently and promptly administering emergency first aid to individuals who are injured or become ill at work.
2. Understand the Role and Responsibilities of a First Aider
In this module, you will learn about the main goals of first aid in the workplace and the role and main duties of a first aider. You will also gain an overview of the regulations related to workplace first aid and learn about consent agreements.
3. Assessing Incidents
In this module, you will understand why it is important to stay calm during medical emergencies and the techniques to use to evaluate emergencies swiftly and accurately. You will learn how to identify potential hazards in the surrounding environment, prioritise treatment when evaluating casualties and understand post-first aid procedures, such as cleanup to prevent infection transmission. You’ll also learn about barrier devices to prevent infection spread and cross-contamination and learn the correct way to provide clear, concise and sufficient information when calling the emergency services.
4. First Aid to Unresponsive Casualties
In this module, you will learn the fundamentals of attending to an unresponsive person. This includes an overview of how the respiratory system works and methods to check for consciousness. You will also learn how to ascertain whether someone is breathing normally and explore possible causes of unconsciousness. The course then covers proper cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, emphasising the use of protective barriers to reduce infection risks and situations where only chest compressions are necessary. Lastly, the module guides you through using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and demonstrates how to position someone in the recovery position.
5. Identifying Choking and Administering First Aid
This module teaches you how to recognise a person who is choking and how to administer first aid for both mild and severe choking episodes. The module also includes instructions on identifying signs of hypoxia and responding appropriately with the required first aid measures.
6. The Circulatory System, Blood Loss, Heart Function and Medical Heart Emergencies
In this module, you will gain an in-depth knowledge of the circulatory system and the effects of major blood loss. It covers the workings of a healthy heart and instructs you on recognising and providing first aid for heart attacks. Additionally, you will learn about cardiac arrests and the crucial role of CPR and AED use in such emergencies.
7. Managing External Bleeding and Shock
In this module, you will focus on managing emergencies related to external bleeding and shock. It encompasses identifying different types of wounds and selecting the correct treatment, recognising various bleeding patterns and their severity, effectively controlling bleeding to provide prompt and appropriate care and dealing with complex wounds.
8. Managing an Anaphylactic Shock Response

Both FAW and EFAW include practical elements and upon completion, individuals are certified as qualified first aiders. EFAW Training is ideal for ‘low risk’ environments like offices, covering common first aid scenarios and emergency medical situations. Requalification covers the same content every three years.
FAW Training includes EFAW topics plus additional training for specific injuries and major illnesses like heart attacks and epilepsy. It’s more extensive, often exceeding a day, and requires requalification every three years.
Does online EFAW training replace practical EFAW training?
No, our online EFAW refresher course is designed to be taken annually during the three year interval period when practical EFAW has taken place or it can be used as an introduction to first aid before you embark on your practical EFAW course.
What are the employers' regulatory obligations to provide first aid at work?
Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers are required to supply adequate first aid equipment, facilities and trained staff, determining what is ‘adequate and appropriate’ for their specific workplace. This applies to all workplaces, including those that are self-employed. Though not legally mandated, the HSE strongly recommends considering first aid for non-employees like the public or students in the first aid needs assessment.
Employers should assess first aid needs based on work nature, workplace size and layout, proximity to medical facilities and working hours. Basic requirements for every organisation include a stocked first aid kit, designated first aid staff that oversee workplace first aid provisions and accessible first aid information for employees.
Regular updates to first aid provisions are crucial, particularly with changes in workplace conditions or work nature. High-risk workplaces, such as offshore sites, should be aware of specific safety regulations.
How many appointed first aid staff or first aiders do I need?
The exact number of first aiders required isn’t rigidly specified; it depends on the nature of your workplace and your employees’ roles. To determine the necessary number of first aiders or appointed first aid staff, your workplace should conduct a first aid risk assessment. By law under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers must make sure they provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and trained staff are available in the workplace.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) does offer guidance on how many first aiders you may need.
What is the difference between a first aider and a person that is just appointed to take responsibility for an organisation's first aid provision?
A first aider and a person appointed to oversee first aid provisions have distinct roles and training needs. A first aider is required to undergo formal training, like practical First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work Training, to provide medical help in case of illness or injury. However, an individual appointed to manage first aid provisions in the workplace doesn’t need formal first aid qualifications so can take our online Workplace First Aid Training.
