How much does a food hygiene certificate cost?

The price of training varies based on your chosen food hygiene and safety training level. Online Level 1 and Level 2 food hygiene and safety courses are less expensive, while Level 3 food hygiene and safety courses are more thorough and typically conducted face to face and designed for those staff supervising and managing food safety systems.

Why is food hygiene training important?

Anyone who handles, prepares, serves and is involved in food must legally undergo food hygiene training. Successful completion of food hygiene courses typically results in a verifiable certificate, serving as proof of training completion and shown to the Environmental Health Officer.

When should staff receive food hygiene and safety training?

Anyone handling food should receive initial training within three months of starting a role. Most individuals will need online Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety training for food handling. If you are not handling raw/open food, you should take online Level 1 Food Hygiene and Safety training. You should refresh your training every 2 years to revisit important food hygiene topics, ensuring compliance and refreshing your knowledge.

What are the differences between Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 food hygiene courses
  • Level 1: This training is suitable for individuals in food-related roles who don’t handle or prepare raw food.
  • Level 2: Most people working in the food industry, including those who prepare or serve food, typically take this course.
  • Level 3: Supervisors and managers who require a comprehensive understanding of food safety control should opt for this level.

If you’re uncertain, it’s advisable to start with Level 2, which covers fundamental food hygiene topics like contamination prevention, personal hygiene, cleaning and safe cooking practices.

What is a basic food hygiene course?
A basic food hygiene course is also known as a Level 2 food hygiene and safety course. This training is commonly required for individuals working in settings where food is cooked, prepared and handled. Level 2 covers vital principles and legal responsibilities in food hygiene, including personal hygiene, proper cleaning techniques, preventing cross-contamination and maintaining proper temperatures. To comply with legal requirements, all food handlers must complete Level 2 training. However, if your role in the food industry doesn’t involve handling or preparing raw food, a Level 1 certificate is sufficient.
Can I take any course at any level first, or is there a specific sequence I must follow, like progressing from Level 1 to Level 2 and so on?

You have the flexibility to take food hygiene courses at any level without having to take them in a particular order. The level primarily serves as a way to gauge the depth of content covered in each training course. Your selection should align with the training requirements for your role in food preparation.

Where can I verify my food hygiene certificate?

You, or anyone else, can easily verify your food hygiene certificate by using our Verify Certificate tool on our website. Simply enter your certificate’s unique reference number to check its completion and renewal date.

What is a food hygiene certificate?
A food hygiene certificate is a document that shows you’ve finished a food hygiene and safety course. It proves you have the knowledge to handle and sell food safely. Having this certificate allows an Environmental Health Officer, employer or customer to quickly see that you’ve had proper training.
Is a food hygiene certificate a legal requirement?

No, a food hygiene certificate is not legally required. However, UK food handling law mandates that anyone handling food must demonstrate they have received training, either on the job or through self-training. You or your employer can keep a record of your certificate to show to anyone who asks about your training.

What food hygiene certificate do I need?
The type of certificate you need for working with food depends on your role in the food business. There are various food hygiene courses available, but it’s important to understand that there are three levels of training.
Do food hygiene training certificates expire?
No, food hygiene training certificates don’t technically expire. While there’s no legal requirement to renew your certificate, it’s recommended that you undergo refresher training at least once every 2 years. Keep track of the renewal date on your food hygiene certificate to know when to arrange for refresher training.
What if I’ve lost my food hygiene certificate?

When you train with Smart Horizons, you’ll have the advantage of our online Learning Management System (LMS). Our LMS securely stores digital copies of all your training certificates in a centralised online system. You can easily access and view your certificates from virtually any device with an internet connection, at any time after completing the course.

How long will my certificate last?
It’s important to continuously demonstrate your proficiency in the latest food hygiene standards. We suggest refreshing your knowledge every 2 years, and we’ll provide reminders to let you know when it’s time to renew.
